United States Senator Tim Scott has endorsed former rival Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, delivering a setback to Nikki Haley, Trump’s closest opponent and fellow South Carolinian.

Scott, who withdrew from the 2024 presidential campaign in November, joined Trump onstage in New Hampshire on the eve of the state’s high-stakes primary the following week.

Addressing Trump supporters in Concord on Friday, Scott said, “We need a president who sees Americans as one American family, which is why I came to the hot state of New Hampshire to endorse the next president of the United States, President Donald Trump.”

Emphasizing conservative values and Christian faith from his childhood in a single-parent household, Scott argued that a Trump presidency would reduce taxes and unite the nation.

“Our nation requires a president who can foster unity,” stated Scott, the only African American Republican in the Senate.

Notably, Scott did not refer to Nikki Haley, the former United Nations ambassador and South Carolina governor who appointed him to the Senate in 2017.

Challenges and Strategies in New Hampshire

Haley is counting on a solid performance in New Hampshire. She aims to maintain her presidential campaign momentum after Trump’s resounding victory in the Iowa caucuses.

Trailing Trump by double digits in New Hampshire, Haley received support from Vermont Governor Phil Scott earlier on Friday. At the same time, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is a distant third in the state.

Trump pushed New Hampshire voters to speed up the Republican primary fight to defeat Joe Biden in November.

We want to win by large margins, so everyone must vote,” stated Trump, who also criticized opponents, branding Haley as “impracticable” for the presidency and condemning DeSantis’s decline in the surveys as “one of the greatest acts of self-destruction I believe I have ever observed.
