The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said hikers found the remains on Saturday morning in Mount Baldy.

Authorities say hikers found human remains in California mountains where British actor Julian Sands disappeared five months ago.

Saturday morning, the remains were discovered near Mount Baldy in Southern California, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

They were taken to the coroner’s office for identification. Which is expected to be concluded the following week, the department added.

After a trek at Mount Baldy, experienced hiker and mountaineer Sands was reported missing on January 13.

The 65-year-old actor from Yorkshire is well-known for his roles in the films A Room With a View, Arachnophobia, Leaving Las Vegas, and Warlock, as well as his television appearances on 24, Smallville, and Banshee.

This week, his family pledged to preserve him “in our hearts with fond memories.”

“We are extremely grateful to the search teams and coordinators who worked tirelessly to locate Julian,” read the family’s statement released by the sheriff’s office.

“We continue to remember Julian fondly as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and an original and collaborative performer.”

Previously, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office stated that it aimed to “bring closure” to the family.

Since Sands’s disappearance, eight ground and air searches have been conducted. However, severe conditions and avalanche risk halted them in March.

Two helicopters and drone operators assisted 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and officials on June 17.

“Despite recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” stated the sheriff’s department at the time.

There are still more than 10 feet of ice and snow in precipitous terrain and ravines in multiple regions.
