The city’s law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the shooting, and no arrests have been made as of yet. Detectives did not believe it was a “random act,” per a previous police statement.

The incident reportedly occurred about 03:30 (07:30 GMT) on Saturday outside the Hampton Inn Hotel in the city’s nightlife center, where the three soldiers were staying.

Officials suspect the shooting was the result of a prior altercation involving one or more individuals at another site in the city.

Officials from the Dutch Ministry of Defense have confirmed that the soldiers were off-duty at the time of the incident and that their families have been alerted.

The three troops were all members of the Commando Corps, one of the Netherlands military’s special operations organizations.

The Indiana National Guard told the AP news agency that the soldiers trained at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center before reaching the state capital after their duty day.

In addition to being used for training by the US Department of Defense, the Indiana military center is also utilized by the armed forces of the US’s worldwide allies.
