The assailant allegedly spoke with the victim before spraying him with an unidentified substance and setting his windbreaker on fire, causing the victim’s face to burn.

Birmingham police are investigating after a man was set on fire while walking home from a mosque.

Monday evening at approximately 7:00 p.m., West Midlands Police believe the victim, who was walking home on Dudley Road, was approached by another male on Brixham Road in Edgbaston.

The two spoke momentarily before the attacker sprayed the victim with an unknown substance, igniting his jacket and burning his face, according to the police.

Subsequently, the man was transported to the hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, they are investigating the online footage of the man being lit on fire.

Supt. James Spencer stated, “We are examining CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to determine who is responsible.”

“Having spoken with individuals this morning, I am aware of their apprehension and their desire for answers.

“We are determined to identify the perpetrator and obtain answers as quickly as possible. And I urge the community to work with us and avoid speculation at this time.

The force announced that additional officers will be in the area today to speak with the community and provide reassurance.
