Diana’s engagement photo blouse may sell for £79,000

David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who later designed Diana’s wedding gown for her marriage to King Charles, the Prince of Wales, crafted the top.

A garment Princess Diana wore for her engagement portrait in 1981 is currently up for auction. The pink crepe blouse, featuring a ruffled collar and oversized front folds, is estimated to be worth between $80,000 (£63,490) and $100,000 (£79,360) in the auction by Julien’s Auctions.

2019, the garment was featured in the Diana: Her Fashion Story exhibition at Kensington Palace. Royal photographer Lord Snowdon captured the creation by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who also designed Diana’s wedding gown.

According to the National Portrait Gallery, the photograph’s publication in Vogue magazine in February 1942 coincided with the official announcement of Charles and Diana’s engagement.

Julien’s Auctions and Hollywood Legends

From December 14 to December 17, Julien’s Auctions and TCM Present: Hollywood Legends will conduct the auction in Beverly Hills, California, and online. Another item for sale is an evening gown worn by Diana, crafted by fashion designer Jacques Azagury in April 1985 in Florence, Italy, with a current assessed value between $100,000 and $200,000 (£158,720).

In September, Diana’s renowned black sheep coat sold for an unprecedented $1.1 million (£904,495) following a 15-minute bidding war at auctioneer Sotheby’s. The initial estimates placed the price at $50,000 to $80,000.

Unearthed by designer Joanna Osborne in an attic in March, the sweater features a whimsical black sheep among white ones. After Osborne and Sally Muir founded Warm and Wonderful knitwear in 1979, it was one of their main designs. The item’s January price of $604,800 broke Diana’s Victor Edelstein aubergine evening gown’s record.
