- Community Protests and Inquiry Following Demolition
Two men were released from custody after being detained in connection with the Crooked House pub fire.
Once known as “Britain’s quirkiest” inn, it caught fire on August 5 and was demolished within 48 hours.
A 66-year-old man from Dudley and a 33-year-old man from Milton Keynes were taken into custody on suspicion of arson with the intent to endanger life.
As investigations into the blaze proceed, they have been released on conditional bail.
Staffordshire Police stated, “We understand the strength of feeling in the community following the fire and subsequent demolition of the building, given the significance and popularity of this cultural landmark.”
Due to mining subsidence, the 18th-century building in Himley was known for its slope walls and floor.
Since Monday, protesters opposed to the demolition have camped out at the site to monitor the foundations and brickwork.
The South Staffordshire Council is conducting its inquiry into the demolition.
