The 84-year-old wife of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Lady Cathy Ferguson, has passed away.

After 57 years together, the couple had three sons, including Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson.

“We are profoundly saddened to confirm Lady Cathy Ferguson’s passing yesterday,” the Ferguson family said in a statement.

“The family asks for privacy at this time.”

In respect, Old Trafford’s flags have been lowered to half-mast, and the men’s and women’s teams will wear black armbands this weekend.

Manchester United issued the following statement: “Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.”

In 1964, Cathy and Sir Alex, both 81 years old, encountered each other at a typewriter manufacturing facility.

During their 27-year partnership, Sir Alex presided over Manchester United as manager. Cathy is purportedly instrumental in convincing him to delay his retirement in 2002.

Ferguson recalled in his autobiography that she advised him as follows: “Initially, your health is excellent. Furthermore, you have no place in my home. Even at the age of three, you are too young.”

Sir Alex retired eleven years later, saying: “Cathy has been my career’s pillar, providing unwavering support and encouragement.

“Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.”

A number of institutions honoured Cathy via social media.

Manchester City commented on X: “Everyone at Manchester City sends their condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family at this very difficult time.”

Arsenal extended its “deepest condolences” and further stated, “May Lady Cathy eternally rest in peace.”

St Mirren, Sir Alex’s former club, stated: “Everyone at St Mirren Football Club sends its deepest condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and family following the sad news of the passing of Lady Cathy Ferguson.”

Aberdeen, an additional former club of Sir Alex, extended its deepest condolences, while Peterborough United Football Club stated, “On behalf of all the members of Darren Ferguson and his family, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of his cherished mother, Lady Cathy.”
