Rory McIlroy has labeled the players who have joined the LIV Golf Series as “dishonest” due to how they have conducted their breakaway.
Four-time major champion Brooks Koepka, whose brother Chase competed in this month’s inaugural event at Centurion Club in Hertfordshire, has signed up for the Saudi-sponsored invitational competitions. Next week in Portland, Oregon, Koepka will compete in the second 54-hole, a 48-man tournament with prize money of $25m (£20.4m).
A few days earlier, the 32-year-old Koepka, who will be suspended by the PGA Tour as a result of his decision, claimed that questions at Brookline were casting a “dark cloud” over the US Open. Three months later, the former world No. 1 Dustin Johnson reversed his position on his commitment to the PGA Tour, which he had stated in March.
McIlroy, a member of the PGA Tour’s player advisory board, was asked whether he was surprised by Koepka’s choice. Yes, because of his earlier comments.
“I believe that’s why I’m astonished by many of these men, as they say, one thing and then do another, which I don’t get.
“I don’t know if that’s for legal reasons or because they can’t – I have no idea – but it’s quite dishonest of them to say one thing and then do another. In both public and private”
