After the Turkish club announced his appointment as manager on Sunday, José Mourinho is returning to football with Fenerbahce.

On Saturday, the Portuguese coach initiated negotiations with the Istanbul giants regarding the replacement of Ismail Kartal. An agreement was swiftly reached. On Sunday evening, Mourinho will be introduced during a ceremony at the club’s Sukru Saracoglu stadium.

Mourinho told Fenerbahce fans that he would “see you tomorrow in Kadikoy, and let’s start our journey together” in a video posted on X late on Saturday. At this time, there are no specifics regarding the duration of his contract.

The official club statement stated that Saracoglu is anticipating the arrival of its new coach, José Mourinho, and its devoted supporters at 7 p.m. This was followed by a post on Sunday morning featuring a photograph of the manager and the caption “MOU zamani” (Mou time).

The 61-year-old will commence his first employment position since departing Roma in January. A series of disputes with referees and the Europa Conference League victory in 2022 characterized his tenure at the club.

The coach, who has served as the head coach of several of Europe’s most prominent clubs, is poised to assume control of a team that placed second in the Super Lig, three points behind their city rivals Galatasaray.

In a relentless title race, the six draws proved costly despite the fact that the previous manager, Kartal, supervised only one loss in the league. He departed the club on Friday, which fueled rumors that Mourinho was poised to succeed him.

Mourinho, who has succeeded with clubs including Chelsea, Porto, Inter, Real Madrid, and Manchester United, will be responsible for assisting Fenerbahce in securing their first league title since 2013-14.

In 2022, the 61-year-old assisted Roma in winning their first European trophy by leading them to the Europa Conference League title. He led them to the Europa League final the following year, where Sevilla defeated them on penalties.

However, when he was dismissed in January, Roma was ranked ninth in Serie A. He was succeeded by Daniele De Rossi, a former player from Italy, and Roma ultimately finished sixth, thereby qualifying for the Europa League.
