Matthew Etherington has been fired by League Two club Crawley Town after just 32 days in charge.
In his first senior management position in football, the former Tottenham winger presided over three matches, one victory, and two losses, leaving the club — taken over by Wagmi United on April – 20th in the league.
Etherington was the club’s second permanent manager of the season, succeeding Kevin Betsy, who held the position for four months. Lewis Young was appointed interim manager after Betsy’s resignation and led the team for a month and a half before leaving the club on 27 November when Etherington was named manager.
The news of Etherington and his assistant Simon Davies’ departure from Broadfield Stadium comes a day after the sale of striker Tom Nichols to bottom-placed Gillingham, a move that has enraged fans. Nichols did not play under Etherington, who stated that the decision was “beyond of my control.”
Kwesi Appiah, a fellow Crawley striker who is presently on loan at Colchester, commented on Twitter that the club account had “certainly been hacked” after the transfer was announced.
Chris Galley, director of football and interim chief executive officer, stated, “It has become evident to all parties concerned that this partnership is not suited to propel the club forward and achieve our objectives.” We have thus opted to move differently. We wish Matty and Simon continued success in their endeavors.
The Crawley Town Supporters’ Association requested a meeting with the club’s owners in response to the news. “On behalf of the fans, we will continue to demand answers and openness from the club,” read a statement.
