Manchester United and Mason Mount have reached a personal terms agreement, and the Red Devils are expected to acquire the Chelsea midfielder this summer.
In addition to allowing Manchester City to initiate negotiations with Mateo Kovacic, Chelsea are prepared for a significant purge. Kovacic, whose contract expires in a year, is anticipated to join the Premier League champions as Pep Guardiola seeks additional depth in central midfield.
The proprietors of Chelsea do not want to retain expiring contract players. This logic applies to Mount, whose contract expires the following year. Chelsea has made no progress in contract negotiations with the England international and now risks losing one of its academy talents.
United and Mounts have not agreed on a transfer fee, with Chelsea anticipated to demand at least £60 million for the 24-year-old.
United’s manager, Erik Ten Hag, desires more energy in the midfield and admires Mount’s athleticism, pressure, and versatility. Arsenal, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich are also aware of the situation.
Mount is desired by incoming Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Nonetheless, it is believed that several United players anticipate starring alongside Mount next season.
Chelsea has also not extended a new contract to Kovacic. The Croatian midfielder, who has spent the last five years at Stamford Bridge, is eager for a new challenge and has been granted permission to speak with City.
Kovacic would appreciate the opportunity to play for Guardiola, who is looking to expand his midfield options. Ilkay Gundogan could leave City on a free transfer. Since departing Leeds in the summer, Kalvin Phillips has struggled as Rodri’s backup.
After spending £600 million on signings since last summer, Chelsea must reduce their roster to recoup funds. Pochettino is eager to rebuild his midfield and is intrigued by Manuel Ugarte of Sporting Lisbon. Chelsea and contract-free N’Golo Kanté have yet to reach an agreement on a new contract.
Milan desires to acquire Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Conor Gallagher is likely to attract interest. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Kalidou Koulibaly, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Christian Pulisic, Trevoh Chalobah, Hakim Ziyech, and César Azpilicueta could also depart the club. Pochettino desires to acquire a custodian and a forward.
