- Lee Carsley named interim England men’s football manager
- Carsley to lead September matches against Ireland and Finland
- FA continues search for a permanent head coach
The England under-21s coach will take over his new role immediately and will lead the Three Lions in September fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Lee Carsley has been named interim manager of the England men’s football team.
It comes after Gareth Southgate stepped down following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
In a statement, Carsley said: “It is an honour to step up and manage this England group on an interim basis. Given my familiarity with the players and the international football cycle, I want to lead the team while the FA searches for a new manager.
My first responsibility is to maintain continuity, and our goal is to gain promotion to the UEFA Nations League.
According to the FA, the 50-year-old will now manage England in September matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland and is expected to remain in the job “while the recruitment process for a new permanent head coach continues.”
He will pick his first England squad on August 29.
Carsley, who was born in Birmingham, played for Ireland before retiring to pursue a coaching career, leading England’s Under-21s – the Young Lions – to victory in the 2023 European Championship.

The under-21s won the European championship for the first time in 39 years, defeating Spain 1-0.
The former Derby and Everton midfielder has spent the last four years with the English FA, working with both the U20s and U21s.
He has already tutored players such as Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon.
Mark Bullingham, FA chief executive, said of Carsley: “Lee is an excellent coach who is well-known to the majority of our current senior group, having worked with most at international or club level.
“He provides a perfect interim solution, and we are convinced he will perform well in the upcoming UEFA Nations League games. We appreciate Lee stepping up to oversee the staff as we continue our recruitment efforts.”
Carsley’s selection is similar to how Southgate gained the position following Sam Allardyce’s abrupt resignation in 2016.
