Joe Root asserts that England has called up seamer Brydon Carse to their World Cup squad in India, where he may assume the role of the middle overs maestro previously held by Liam Plunkett.

The subsequent seamer in line, the 28-year-old might have made a stronger case for the original 15-man squad if he had not encountered his own injury concerns this summer. Ultimately, Surrey’s Gus Atkinson prevailed, but he will be present in Bengaluru to support the group.

Carse, who has taken 14 wickets in 12 ODIs, may not be ready to face Sri Lanka on Thursday. However, given the uncertainty surrounding a team that has lost three of its first four games, he will attempt to secure a spot in the lineup. Root believes Carse could succeed Plunkett, the 2019 World Cup champion who aced a challenging position in the middle of the innings, but England has yet to identify a suitable successor.
“Brydon is an exceptional package in every way,” he explained. “He provides you with some useful runs, is exceptionally dynamic in the field, and possesses a singular ability to take wickets. He has that Ben Stokes quality in which there are times when it seems as though nothing is happening, but then he takes wickets in a manner reminiscent of Junior Plunkett. Very similar to him.”

Although his contribution to England’s white-ball revolution is frequently overlooked, Plunkett was the sole member of the squad to finish the 2019 World Cup with a perfect record of victories.
Root stated, “Pudsey [Plunkett] may not appreciate my stating this, but he has nearly everything to offer with the bat. Although he may not have much to offer in the locker room just yet, his large personality and pleasant demeanor make him a valuable addition. A smile is certainly contagious, right?
