Bundee Aki, an Irish centre, is one of four candidates alongside French captain Antoine Dupont, Eben Etzebeth from South Africa, a World Cup finalist, and Ardie Savea from New Zealand for the title of men’s player of the year at World Rugby.

The winner will be announced on Sunday in Paris, the day following the World Cup final between the Springboks and All Blacks.

Performance Highlights

Despite Ireland’s elimination in the quarter-finals, Aki led the attack statistics through the pool phase of their 2021 World Cup campaign in France. In contrast, scrum-half Dupont, who won the award in 2021, was unable to guide his side to victory on home turf.

For the Springboks this season, Lock Etzebeth has excelled in the second row. Whereas the All Blacks’ loose forward Savea has been exceptional.

Two New Zealanders are among the nominees for the breakthrough player of the year: prop Tamaiti Williams and flanker Mark Tele’a. French wing Louis Bielle-Biarrey and South Africa fly-half Manie Libbok, who was absent from his team’s matchday 23 for the World Cup final on Saturday, are the other nominees.

Coach of the Year Candidates

Simon Raiwalui of Fiji is among the candidates for coach of the year for the FIFA World Cup, having guided his nation to the quarter-finals and a victory at Twickenham over England. Nevertheless, Andy Farrell (Ireland), Ian Foster (New Zealand), or Jacques Nienaber (South Africa) is the likely winner.

They will reveal nominees, also the women’s player of the year, after the WXV tournament in New Zealand concludes on November 4.
