Wayne Rooney’s imminent return to managerial duties at Birmingham City is on the horizon. Following John Eustace’s dismissal on Monday, Wayne Rooney, who left DC United last weekend after failing to qualify for the Major League Soccer postseason, is in line to replace him at St Andrew’s.

Garry Cook, Birmingham’s chief executive officer, is reportedly the architect of the agreement that has brought the former England captain to the club. Cook, once Manchester City’s CEO, helped Chris Kirchner’s disastrous acquisition of Derby County, Rooney’s last club in England, last year.

Birmingham issued a rather peculiar statement on Monday morning confirming Eustace’s departure: “It is crucial that the football management and the board of directors are in complete agreement regarding the importance of nurturing a culture of ambition and a winning mentality throughout the entire football club.”

Birmingham will announce Eustace’s successor in the coming days, the statement continued.

Rooney, upon announcing his departure from DC United, stated, “The time has come. I have made every possible effort to advance this club to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened. The issue is timing. “I’m returning without any firm plans.”

Eustace, whose managerial prospects at Rangers have been linked to the club, ends his tenure with the club in sixth place in the Championship after a strong start to the year, further solidified by a 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Friday. Last year, Birmingham finished seventeenth.
