As AI takes over the legal profession, future attorneys may indeed live up to their inflated reputations for being cold, calculating, and mechanistic.
Two AIs developed by the law technology company Luminance have, for the first time, negotiated a contract without human intervention.
Contract Details
The AIs debated the specifics of a legitimate Non-Disclosure Agreement between Luminance and one of its clients, proSapient.
The contract concluded within minutes, requiring only the addition of a human signature.
One week after Elon Musk predicted that AI would eventually lead to a destitute utopia in which no one is required to work, this astounding demonstration occurs.
During a discussion with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at the Bletchley Park AI Summit, Elon Musk stated that artificial intelligence would ultimately eliminate the need for human labor and be the most disruptive force in the annals of work.
“At some point, employment will no longer be necessary,” Elon Musk stated at the summit.
Personal fulfillment can be obtained through employment, but AI is capable of performing any task.
The Impact of AI on Legal Work
Historically, physical repetitive labor has been supplanted by automation. However, Luminance’s legal AI demonstrates that even attorneys and other intellectual professions are vulnerable to automation.

The AIs read and evaluated the contract independently at the event in the London office of Luminance before proposing amendments and implementing modifications.
After undergoing training using a dataset comprising more than 150 million legal documents, the artificial intelligence has developed the capability to identify areas of legal risk and gain insights from past contracts.
As an illustration, the non-disclosure agreement initially proposed a contractual term of six years.
However, Luminance’s artificial intelligence identified that this was contrary to company policy and redrafted it automatically to a three-year term.
Nick Emmerson, president of the Law Society, told MailOnline, “AI will likely be unable to completely replace the function of legal expertise performed by legally qualified professionals for the foreseeable future.”
This, he explained, is due to the fact that “clients have unique vulnerabilities and needs that machines cannot yet master,” necessitating the use of human judgment to prevent automated decisions from producing potential false positives.
“AI is also unlikely to master the art of negotiation and, ultimately, bargaining,” he continued.
Chief of Staff and MD at Luminance, Jaeger Glucina, concurs that the technology is not intended to replace solicitors, but rather to assist them in performing their duties more effectively.
