A French fashion designer has introduced a luxury handbag fashioned from a genuine meteorite at an extraterrestrial price.

The astronomically priced ‘Mini Meteorite Swipe Bag’ was designed by the Parisian fashion house Coperni and costs £35,000 (40,000 euros).

The limited edition item is made from resin and lunar rock that crashed to Earth 55,000 years ago and was discovered in 1968 in the south of France.

Coperni asserts that the design, which measures nine inches from the top of the strap to the bottom, “subtly combines archeology, design, and classical and primitive art.”

The brand has already introduced a handbag made wholly of transparent glass for $2,800 (£2,200), allowing individuals to see what is being carried inside.

Due to its “bespoke nature,” Coperni does not return meteorite bags.

It adds that each unit sold will be “slightly different” and will come with a certificate of authenticity.

Coperni’s website states, “Each piece is handcrafted, so the shape may vary slightly from the image.”

Each order’s meteorite will come from where it fell on Earth.

When Coperni’s new invention was shared on social media, it was met with varied reactions.

A user on Instagram described it as “iconic,” while another referred to it as a “shopping bag for the Flintstones.”

Another commented that it resembled the interior of my mother’s old footwear.

Despite being made of stone, the purse weighs less than the average handbag at just 3.9 pounds (1.8 kilograms).

Semar, an Italian company, crafted the moon rock by hand in Italy and incorporated it into the purse.

Since its discovery in France 55 years ago, Coperni’s rock’s whereabouts and acquisition are unclear.

A meteorite is a solid fragment of an asteroid or comet that originates in space and endures its journey through the atmosphere to reach the Earth’s surface.

Meteoroid (a rocky object in space) and meteor vary slightly. (a meteoroid that has entered the atmosphere of a planet).

When a meteor hurtles towards Earth, high-pressure air seeps into its pores and fissures, causing it to erupt and spread.

Coperni is taking orders for the Mini Meteorite Swipe Bag before shipping starts next week.

The Mini Meteorite Swipe Bag is from Coperni’s fall-winter 2023 collection, which debuted in Paris earlier this month.

Spot, the robot dog developed by the American company Boston Dynamics, joined the Coperni models on the catwalk as part of a partnership between the two companies.

As part of the performance, one model wore a yellow and black outfit inspired by the robot’s distinctive design.

It’s not the first time Coperni’s bizarre initiatives have garnered attention; the company has previously released glass swipe bags in a variety of colors, including a see-through version.

The item is crafted from extra-thick blast glass to prevent it from shattering when dropped.

Ellis Ranson, a fashion stylist, told FEMAIL, “With the new “it bag,” we can finally see what’s inside a celebrity’s bag, no matter how bizarre it may be.”

A 3D-printed pigeon bag by British fashion name JW Anderson costs £650 or $850.
