8 ways to screenshot Windows 10/11

Various techniques are available for capturing screenshots on Windows 10 and Windows 11 applications.

Whether you wish to capture a portion of the Screen or the entire display, we have compiled the most effective methods for capturing a screenshot in Windows.

On Windows 10 or 11, the simplest method for capturing an entire screen screenshot is to select the Print Screen (PrtScn) key on the keyboard.

You can have the screenshot transferred to your clipboard or saved to your screenshots folder. To preserve the file, copy and transfer the screenshot into an image-editing application, such as Microsoft Word or Paint.

To capture a screenshot and have it saved automatically to the Screenshots folder on Windows 10 or Windows 11, select the Windows key plus PrtScn. When your Screen becomes dim, an entire screen screenshot will be captured and saved to the specified folder.

Alt + Screen Print

Press Alt + PrtScn to capture only the active window you are currently working in. To preserve it, you must copy the screenshot to your clipboard before pasting it into another application.

The Windows 10 Snip & Sketch Application

Using the Windows 10 Snip & Sketch application to annotate, share, or personalise screenshots is the most effective method on Windows. This is the most effective method for annotating photographs before sharing them, as it includes cropping tools, an eraser, and a ruler.

Utilise the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + Shift + S to enable Snip & Sketch. A micro menu will appear at the top of the Screen, providing the option to capture in full-screen, free-form, rectangular, or window orientation. In this context, the Screen will dim.

RectangularSize a rectangle for your screenshot.
Free-formDraw free-hand with your cursor.
WindowChoose a specific window to capture.
Full-screenGrab an image of your entire screen.

You have the following Snip & Sketch options at your disposal for capturing a screenshot:

Once the screenshot has been captured, it will be copied to the clipboard, and a preview indicator will manifest in the lower-right corner of the display.

By accessing the Snip & Sketch application through the preview notification and clicking the button, one can modify the screenshot using the provided drawing tools, save it to a disc, or share it.

Snipping Functionality in Windows 11

While the Snipping Tool is present in Windows 10, it is not typically the preferred method for capturing screenshots. With a significant update in Windows 11, the Snipping Tool is now the most effective method to capture custom screenshots.

In Windows 11, you can launch the Snipping Tool by searching for it or by pressing Windows Key + Shift + S. Similar to Snip & Sketch, a toolbar containing various screenshot options will appear at the top of the Screen, and the Screen will dim. By utilising this toolbar, you can capture a full-screen, freeform, rectangular, or full-window image and timing your screenshot for the number of seconds required to bring up the window you wish to capture.

You can immediately print your captured screenshot, save it to the Screenshots folder, or copy it to your clipboard. You can save and further edit the document by selecting the preview icon in the display’s lower-right corner.

The Game Bar

You can use the Game Bar, an overlay, to capture screenshots and record recordings within most Windows applications and games. Follow the subsequent instructions to access and utilise it:

  1. To begin, key Windows plus G.
  2. To access the Capture menu, select the Capture button (the camera icon) in the top menu of the overlay menu.
  3. To capture a screenshot, select the camera icon from the Capture menu. Another feature is recording a video clip by selecting the record button and choosing the microphone icon to include audio.

Volume + Power Up

Select the Power button plus the Volume Up button to capture a screenshot using a Microsoft Surface device and Windows 10. As the Screen dims, your screenshot will be saved to the Pictures > Screenshots folder.
