Stadia users will continue to have access to their games until the service shuts down in four months, at which point refunds will be granted.
Google has announced that it would shut down its Stadia cloud gaming service in early 2019.
It was introduced three years ago and allows users to stream games on a TV, laptop, or mobile device without a console.
Google stated that it made the “tough decision” because the feature “did not acquire the traction among users that we anticipated.”
The Stadia store is now closed, and consumers who purchased hardware, games, and add-on content will be refunded, according to a blog post by CEO Phil Harrison.
However, Stadia Pro subscriptions will not be refundable.
“Players will have access to their games library and be able to play until January 18, 2023, allowing them to complete their final play sessions,” he stated.
We anticipate that the majority of refunds will be processed by mid-January 2023.
Until last week’s news, Stadia had maintained that the platform was “alive and well” with over 100 titles debuting despite the closure of its in-house games development team in 2017.
Google stated that it would “continue to invest in new tools, technology, and platforms” for the gaming industry.
