This autumn, iOS 17’s new features and apps won’t work on iPhones and iPads older than five years.
The iPhone X, the first iPhone to feature FaceID. Along with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, will not be compatible with the new operating system.
The iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR will be the first to run the new OS later this year.
iOS 17’s new features include the elimination of the need to utter ‘Hey’ to activate Siri, a new Journal app for tracking life goals, enhancements to autocorrect, and a ‘Check In’ feature to notify friends and family that you’ve arrived home safely.
However, only the most advanced iPhones, starting with the iPhone 12 in 2021 and newer models, will be able to be controlled with hand gestures during a FaceTime call, unleashing amusing augmented reality (AR) reaction graphics.
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the first versions with a glass back, were released in September 2017.
And iPhone X was given its appellation in 2018 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.
It was Apple’s first full-screen smartphone to eschew Touch ID in favor of facial recognition.
The iPhone X was the most expensive iPhone ever at $999 for 64GB and $1,149 for 256GB.
Apple’s A12 Bionic microprocessor, a 64-bit six-core CPU with a maximum clock speed of 2.49 GHz, or newer hardware distinguishes these pre-2018 iPhone models from their successors.
The new iOS 17 updates are expected to be extensive, with a plethora of new security features, including enhancements to Safari Private Browsing and Apple’s child safety provisions, as well as additional aesthetic and usability enhancements.Â
The new operating system will feature redesigned contact cards for you and the individuals in your address book, as well as a ‘StandBy’ mode that transforms your iPhone into a desk or nightstand clock while it charges, complete with customizable quick-reference information.
Thanks to Apple’s Neural Engine, iOS17 will be able to live transcribe incoming voicemails, a feature known as Live Voicemail. Allowing users to determine whether or not to answer a call based on the incoming voicemail.
But gesture-based augmented reality reactions during FaceTime are not the only new feature exclusive to iPhone 12 and later models.
Additionally, these users will have access to enhanced autocorrect and in-line autocomplete suggestions on their keyboards.Â
One feature for users with vision impairments will be exclusive to the iPhone 12, 13, and 14 Pro models.
The new accessibility feature, dubbed ‘Point and Speak,’ enables users to interact with the text surrounding them daily. This is an excellent addition for situations where Braille text is unavailable or impracticable.
The iOS 17 update cutoffs affect more than just iPhones.
Most iPads released before 2018 and a few cheap tablets with 6th-generation A10 CPUs will run iPadOS 17.
