The absence of consistent weather patterns, as stated by the National Trust, is “inducing disorder” in the natural world.

It warns that as a result of climate change disrupting the seasonal rhythm, flora and wildlife are becoming more susceptible to disease.

Symbolic of the impacts are the estates under the management of the National Trust.

According to the report, this seasonal “baseline shift” disrupts not only the annual behaviours of plants and trees but also the behaviours of animals.

“The gradual changes we are observing regarding the extension of our seasons may not seem like much over the course of a year, but the consequences are enormous over the course of a decade,” said Ben McCarthy, the National Trust’s chief of Nature and Restoration Ecology.

A series of temperature records were broken in 2023, including the warmest June and highest sea temperatures ever documented along the coast of the United Kingdom.

An abnormally mild winter fostered the proliferation of pests and diseases.

Algal colonies have increased in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs as a result of the combination of high temperatures and insufficient precipitation, leading to diminished water levels.

Environmental Impacts and Warnings

This has occasionally resulted in mass fish mortality due to oxygen depletion, causing suffocation.

Furthermore, the nation was beset by severe storms, including Babet and Ciaran, which wreaked havoc on coastlines and landscapes.

Mr. McCarthy warns that the year-round temperature increase may drastically affect the oak, the most recognizable tree in the United Kingdom.

As cold wave durations decrease, there is frequently insufficient time for the eradication of diseases.

He explains that during these brief cold periods, the oak processionary moth, whose caterpillars infest oak trees, can flourish, thereby increasing the susceptibility of the oaks to invasion by other parasites.

As the climate of Europe warms, the moth species has been migrating progressively northwards from its traditional habitat in the Mediterranean.

The Trust also suggests that warmer winters could have an effect on our heathlands, permitting the heather beetle to establish itself and decimate vast swaths of the plant.

Dormice, among other hibernating animals, are particularly endangered. They awaken earlier from their winter slumber and are capable of rapidly depleting their critical remaining energy reserves.

Adapting to Climate Challenges

Rangers have observed that offspring are born in the autumn rather than the summer as a result of red deer in some regions becoming sexually active later in the year.

“They are incapable of utilising their fat reserves to survive the winter,” explains Simon Powne, wildlife manager for the National Trust at Holnicote Estate.

“Anything that cannot withstand these weather conditions’ depletion of energy and heat is rendered incapable of enduring.” This has resulted in an increased mortality rate.

However, in comparison to other nations, the United Kingdom has been comparatively spared extreme weather in recent years, according to Keith Jones, national climate change consultant at the National Trust.

As an illustration of the severe heatwaves and scorching temperatures that have ravaged portions of Europe this year, he cautions that the United Kingdom will likely encounter more extreme weather in the coming years.

As this new complex waterscape began to “bed in” and flourish at Holnicote, Mr. McCarthy explains, “Within three months of the project’s conclusion, we literally saw more wildlife return.”
