Rishi Sunak pledge tracker: How are his five goals going?

  1. Halving Inflation: A Promise to Watch
  2. Economic Growth: Tracking the GDP
  3. Reducing Debt and Managing Finances

Rishi Sunak pledged to cut inflation in half, grow the economy, reduce debt, reduce NHS waiting lists and wait times, and end small boat crossings.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made five “peace of mind” promises to the British public at the beginning of the year 2023.

Since then, he and his ministers have seldom neglected a chance to list them. In case you were unaware, he has sworn to:

  • Halve inflation
  • Grow the economy
  • Reduce the debt
  • Reduce NHS waiting times and waiting lists
  • Halt the vessels

He then requested that people hold him to his word.

This tracker lets you track his progress.

How we measure our progress:

Commitment 1: Halve inflation

When Mr Sunak promised to halve inflation, the headline figure of Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) in the fourth quarter of 2022 was 10.7%. This indicates that it must decline to 5.35 percent by the end of the year to fulfill the commitment.

CPI is the rate at which prices are expected to increase.

The fourth quarter inflation rate for 2023 is anticipated to be released on January 17, 2024.

Commitment 2: Expand the economy

The Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, of the United Kingdom, measures the economic activity of all businesses, governments, and individuals in the nation.

If GDP is increasing, the economy is expanding. On February 13, 2024, the GDP for the fourth quarter of 2023 is expected to be released.

Commitment 3: Reduce debt

Debt is measured as a percentage of GDP because it is deemed to be declining if its growth is slower than that of the economy.

The 2023 Autumn Statement will provide these debt forecasts.

Reduce NHS waiting lists and wait periods

This is the only promise that applies solely to England, as the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland administer health care.

The prime minister also stated that he would reduce the number of patients awaiting treatment and the time it takes to receive care.

Every month on the second Thursday, waiting list statistics are released with a two-month postponement. Therefore, we should learn by mid-February 2024.

5th Commitment: Stop the vessels

Mr. Sunak stated that he would “pass new laws to stop small boats” so that illegal immigrants could be “immediately detained and deported.”

The government ultimately passed its Illegal Migration Bill on 17 July.

The number of individuals arriving in the United Kingdom via small boats is tallied daily and published with a one-day lag.
