Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that the United Kingdom will send Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine to aid in the country’s military effort.
No. 10 reported that he spoke with Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday and stated he would provide the equipment and additional artillery systems.
The action, according to Downing Street, demonstrates “the UK’s ambition to deepen support.”
The initial commitment is for perhaps a dozen tanks.
President Zelensky has expressed gratitude to the United Kingdom, stating that the decision to supply tanks “would not only reinforce us on the battlefield but also send the proper signal to other partners.”
He stated that the United Kingdom’s backing was “always robust” and “today impregnable.”
Mr. Sunak stated that the Challengers, the primary battle tank of the British Army, will assist Kyiv’s soldiers in “pushing back Russian troops.”
Mr. Sunak and Mr. Zelensky, according to No. 10, also addressed recent Ukrainian wins, “compounding their military and morale challenges,” and the “need to embrace this moment with an acceleration of global military and diplomatic support.
