The prime minister has committed to match this year’s funding next year and is currently in New York, where she is urging other international leaders to join her in supporting Ukraine.
The culture minister stated that the government’s pledge to offer at least £2.3 billion in military aid to Ukraine next year will help alleviate the cost of living crisis.
Michelle Donelan told that the aid would assist in reducing fuel prices in the United Kingdom and that the government will disclose how it will fund the plan.
Overnight on Monday, the prime minister, Liz Truss, announced the pledge to provide Ukraine with the same level of assistance next year as it has this year.
She was her route to New York for the General Assembly of the United Nations, her first overseas trip as prime minister.
The United Kingdom is the second largest military donor to Ukraine, having pledged £2.3 billion this year to send hundreds of missiles, air defense systems, and other military hardware.
Ms. Donelan told Kay Burley: “We believe it is of the utmost importance that we stand up for democracy, that we continue to protect Ukraine in their fight, and that we stand up for the rest of the globe, which must reduce its worldwide dependence on Russia, which is a part in the rising cost of petrol.
“Consequently, this will reduce the cost of living for individuals worldwide, not just in the United Kingdom.
“And we hope that other nations will see our actions and emulate them.
We shall specify precisely where the funds are coming from.
She stated that she did not wish to “pre-empt” what Kwasi Kwarteng will reveal in Friday’s “mini-budget.”
Ms. Donelan also denied that the cost-of-living crisis would necessitate a rethinking of the United Kingdom’s stance in Ukraine.
We are not reassessing our support for Ukraine; rather, we are increasing our support for Ukraine.
James Murray, the shadow financial secretary of the Treasury, stated that it was “absolutely right” to provide Ukraine with as much assistance as possible and prevent Vladimir Putin from “using energy as a weapon.”
However, he doubted that the government had a solid plan for aiding Ukraine.
“In addition to offers of money and support, I believe a long-term strategy is necessary,” he told.
“This includes a plan for energy in the United Kingdom, as Putin uses energy as a weapon.
“As energy prices continue to rise, we must ensure that residents are protected through the winter and beyond.”
The administration must prioritize guiding the British people through “the challenging months ahead,” he added.
