Unexpected health advantages of having your nails done

  • Manicures improve mental health.
  • Salon visits boost relaxation.
  • Self-disclosure enhances well-being.

Scientists have identified the health benefits of having your nails done.

Manicurist visits bring happiness, relaxation, and anxiety reduction, according to extensive studies.

Research suggests that brain chemicals provide the feel-good benefits of human contact.

However, recent research suggests that the health benefits are attributable to an entirely different factor.

The Psychology of Nail Care

A new study reveals that it is, in fact, the consequence of “superficial self-disclosure,” which is colloquially referred to as the lighthearted conversation that occurs at the nail salon.

A study was conducted by researchers from two universities in Japan to examine the psychological ramifications of nails polish on 500 women.

Approximately 300 women visited a salon on a regular basis. The remainder either did their manicures at home or not at all.

The participants were subsequently requested to assess the degree to which they encountered different emotions and attitudes throughout a session of nails care using a four-point Likert scale ranging from “not at all” to “considerably.”

Female consumers’ interactions with manicurists and other customers were also questioned.

Positive Effects of Salon Visits

Nail salon customers reported more good emotions, including relaxation, than home customers.

The most enthralling aspect was how the subjects discussed with others during the appointment affected the attendees’ disposition.

Researchers found that superficial self-disclosure, defined as conversations about daily life and interests, was associated with an increase in positive emotions, whereas negative personality traits and life challenges constituted deeper self-disclosure, which had an adverse effect on specific psychological outcomes.

Associate professor Atsushi Kawakubo of Saitama Gakuen University and author of the study stated to PsyPost, “Our research indicates that salon nails care, in conjunction with light self-disclosure, may have a positive effect on an individual’s psychological state.”

This exercise promotes self-care and the benefits of sharing personal views in a comfortable setting to improve mental health.

No control group was included, and the data were self-reported, therefore more research is needed to draw conclusions.
