According to a study, a battery-powered Zapper initially used in veterinary medicine can help alleviate some of the worst symptoms of long-term Covid.

The Arc4Health armband is the size and shape of a TV remote and fits into a Velcro cuff, similar to a blood pressure monitor, which is then wrapped around the thigh or arm.

Microcurrent therapy emits a mild electric current into the skin, and 53% of long-term Covid patients who wore the Zapper for three hours per day for three months reported feeling less fatigued.

Research also showed improvements in other illness symptoms like shortness of breath and changed smell and taste.

At the beginning of the investigation, fifty-four Arc4Health users with long Covid – which affects approximately two million Britons – responded to a questionnaire about their symptoms. The 12-week study found that weariness was the most common complaint and improved the most.

Previous clinical trials have indicated that the treatment may alleviate joint pain and accelerate the healing of sprains and strains. It is often used to cure injured racehorses.

Dr. Dean Eggitt, a GP from Doncaster, believes the device has some advantage, adding: ‘It could be a powerful placebo effect, but we also know that sending a weak electrical current through the skin reduces pain locally and improves muscle strength over time.

It is not covered by the National Health Service because there is insufficient evidence that it is effective. But patients who are aware of this may choose to pay for it.

The overwhelming majority of long-term Covid patients report having been affected for more than a year. However, because the precise causes of some patients’ persistent problems are unknown, doctors are unsure of how to treat it.

For Madeleine Duncan-Booth, 52, from Berkshire, the Arc4Health device has been life-changing. She states, “Prior to contracting Covid last year, I was a very fit and active person, running and swimming two or three times per week and practising yoga.

“Long Covid was incapacitating; a 25-minute walk could leave me exhausted for several days.

Within three weeks of purchasing the Arc4Health system, I experienced a dramatic return to normalcy. I have recently participated in two swims, a long walk, and a 90-minute shopping excursion without experiencing any fatigue.
