A woman with type 2 diabetes revealed her fears for her life after Ozempic severely burned her genitals and caused ‘skin pieces’ to fall off her body.

Texas professor Dr. Maria Rosas was prescribed the once-weekly medication for her type 2 diabetes with the hope of reducing her daily medication regimen.

The first week went well, with controlled blood glucose levels, but the following week, she experienced severe back, genital, and buttock discomfort, with dark redness resembling sunburn.

Dr. Rosas described the burning pain and skin issues she experienced, attributing them to an allergic reaction to Ozempic, which prompted her to discontinue the medication.

She contacted Ozempic’s helpline and the FDA to report her experience.

In clinical trials, 8% of patients experienced an allergic reaction to semaglutide, the drug in Ozempic.

Dr. Rosas is now on a strict diet to manage her blood sugar and does not recommend Ozempic due to its side effects.

Ozempic and Wegovy, both containing semaglutide, were initially for diabetes but were also found to aid in weight loss, leading to off-label use for weight loss.

More than four million prescriptions for weight loss medications like it were written in 2022, with Ozempic being the leader.

Estimates show 37 million American adults have diabetes, a condition that affects insulin production or absorption.

A Novo Nordisk spokeswoman emphasized patient safety and recommended patients experiencing side effects consult their doctors.

Patients have reported various injection-related side effects, including vivid dreams, food aversion, and muscle loss.

Some report sagging skin, melancholy, suicidal thoughts, and quick weight gain after rapid weight reduction.
