The addition of sugar to coffee or tea may not be detrimental to our health, according to research.
The government’s 2015 dietary recommendations advised adults to limit their daily sugar consumption to 30 grams (approximately seven teaspoons) to safeguard dental health and combat the rising tide of diabetes and obesity-related diseases. Additionally, the NHS advises reducing the amount of sugar in coffee and tea “until you can eliminate it entirely” or substituting artificial substitutes.
Contradictory Research Findings
A new study, however, has determined that there is no correlation between sweetening beverages and an increased risk of diabetes and premature mortality.
Since the 1970s, Dutch, Danish, and British scientists have monitored and evaluated males as part of the Copenhagen Male Study, for which they analyzed data. The precise quantity of sugar incorporated into the heated beverages of the men in the study remained unknown; however, in general, there was no significant difference in the risk of health complications between those who admitted to adding sugar to their tea or coffee and those who denied doing so.

The authors wrote, “There was no statistically significant association between sugar content in coffee and tea and mortality from any cause, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes.”
Comprehensive Analysis Reveals Health Risks
However, a recent comprehensive analysis has changed this perception, concluding that excessive sugar intake is detrimental to health rather than beneficial, particularly in the context of cardiometabolic diseases such as diabetes, heart attacks, and stroke. Also a comprehensive examination of 73 extensive studies and over 8,600 scientific articles revealed noteworthy adverse correlations among excessive sugar intake, metabolic disorders, and cardiovascular complications.
The Copenhagen Male Study
They advised in the British Medical Journal, “Reduce the consumption of added sugars to less than six teaspoons per day and limit sugar-sweetened beverages to less than one serving per week in order to reduce the adverse effects of sugars.”
