While many people continue to believe that cancer treatment occurs exclusively in hospitals, an increasing number of patients are electing to be treated at home.
68 percent of Brits who answered a YouGov survey* commissioned by the specialty pharmacy Sciensus said they would prefer at-home cancer treatment. This trend is a reflection of the enormous public demand.
Eighty-four percent of those with cancer said this would be less stressful, seventy-nine percent said it would be more comfortable, and eighty-two percent said the lack of travel would make it more convenient.
Six years have passed since Jim, from Halifax, was recommended to Sciensus nurses by a mesothelioma specialist after his initial diagnosis.
Jim began undergoing two types of chemotherapy in 2016. After surgery, he underwent two years of immunotherapy delivered by Sciensus nurses.
During the course of his treatment for mesothelioma, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer.
His focused therapy is administered monthly, with visits from nurses to ensure he is well enough for treatment.
Every month I have my blood drawn, and two days later I receive treatment, as Jim explains.
In addition, he has routine blood tests that reveal any abnormalities that require immediate attention.
Sciensus is the top provider of at-home cancer therapies in the United Kingdom and has been assisting patients for over three decades.
Jim suggests home therapy as a safe and convenient option that can be extremely beneficial for both the patient and their family.
He replies, “It’s not just the patient.” Your family can continue with their life without having to accompany you to the hospital and wait.
It is a privilege for everyone, not just me. When ill and undergoing treatment, you must rely on family members.
It can be a half-day or even a full day out of the house, and if you’re receiving treatment every week, it’s a major nuisance.
‘Also, it is considerably more exhausting to wait around and travel to and from hospitals. When receiving therapy at home, there is no waiting and no worry.
Jim identifies the nursing care he has gotten as one of his greatest advantages.
Over the past six years, the Sciensus nurses have been of the highest caliber, most professional, most compassionate, and most qualified.
They genuinely care about my well-being.
I’ve always had a cancer-specialist nurse serving as a liaison between myself and my consultant.
“That is a marvellous thing. I can contact them at any time, and they can relay information.
“It is flawless and the communication is excellent. I can contact Sciensus whenever I need assistance; there is always someone available to assist me.’
Jim is among the tens of thousands of patients who receive safe, convenient care from Sciensus and their skilled nurses annually.
He adds, “This service has made an enormous difference in my life.”
It means that I have the ability and stamina to endure treatment without the burden of traveling, finding and paying for parking, and waiting in the hospital.
