Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun may have committed suicide

Since the actor was the subject of an investigation regarding allegations of illicit drug use, he was questioned by the police for 19 hours over the weekend.

Lee Sun-kyun, an Oscar-winning South Korean actor best known for his performance in the film Parasite, has been discovered deceased in what appears to be suicide.

At 10.30 a.m. on December 27, police in Seoul confirmed to the Yonhap news agency that a man in his forties was discovered incapacitated in a parking garage. Police identified the actor as 48 years old at that time.

Yonhap reports that earlier on Wednesday, the actor’s spouse informed the police that Lee had departed from their residence and that she had discovered what seemed to be a suicide note.

Lee was investigated for illegal drug use during a government crackdown.

Police had questioned the actor three times, with the most recent interrogation lasting 19 hours over the weekend.

South Korea’s drug laws carry minimum six-month sentences to maximum fourteen-year sentences.

Lee claimed a barman deceived him into using illegal substances and then attempted to blackmail him, according to Yonhap.

Lee and his fellow cast members received a Screen Actors Guild Award for their performances in the 2019 comedy thriller Parasite, for which he was recognised for his portrayal as Park Dong-ik, the affluent father.

Four Academy Awards later, Parasite was awarded Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars.

Additionally, the actor has garnered recognition for his prominent roles in South Korean films. Such as the thriller Helpless (2012) and All About My Wife (2014).

He was also the protagonist in Dr. Brain (2021), the first Korean-language original series on Apple TV+. For this achievement, he was nominated for an International Emmy Award.
