With the infectious dance anthem Padam Padam, Kylie Minogue has achieved her biggest solo hit in more than a decade.
It is the first entry for the artist since 2010’s All The Lovers, which peaked at number three.
Together with Cher, Lulu, and Diana Ross, Kylie is one of only four women to reach the UK’s top 10 in five different decades.
The singer remarked that the success of the song, which has gone viral on TikTok, “really surprised us all.
She told Zoe Ball on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show earlier this week, “I can’t even, I can’t even, full stop!” “We enjoyed it as a team, but I have no idea how it has taken off.”
Since its debut at number 26 four weeks ago, the song has been consistently climbing the charts. This week, it climbed three positions to achieve the ninth position.
Kylie has not been in the top 10 in any capacity since appearing on Taio Cruz’s 2011 single Higher as a featured artist.

Padam Padam is also popular in Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Argentina, Chile, Germany, El Salvador, and New Zealand.
Supposedly influenced by the Edith Piaf composition of the same name, the title imitates the sound of a beating heart.
“It’s onomatopoeic,” Kylie explained. “D-dum, d-dum, just like a heartbeat”
Since its release last month, however, fans have adopted the term “Padam” to mean a variety of things, including greetings and farewells, as well as a vocal stamp of approbation.

“It means being gay and having a great time,” an Instagram user explained.
“People are amusing. “It’s a noun, a verb, and an adjective now,” Kylie told Zoe Ball.
“You know, when people depart, they yell ‘Padam!’ As if they’ve transformed into servants or something. It has taken on a life of its own, and I am having the time of my life watching what others are creating.”
Louis Staples wrote in Harper’s Bazaar that the phrase fits into a history of “queer people using art as part of a coded language that only we – the initiated – understand”.
“San Francisco’s Castro District in the 1970s, during the time of Harvey Milk, was a historical example,” he remarked, “when there was an entire sartorial code for gay men, according to which not only different-colored handkerchiefs but also everyday garments such as Converse and plaid shirts signified different things.”
Padam Padam appears to have entered the same homosexual lexicon, the shorthand that many of us use to communicate.
Fans are reportedly petitioning the Oxford English Dictionary to include the term in the next edition.
Kylie told Capital Radio, “That’s a crazy idea.” Because of what does it signify? It has whatever meaning you give it.”
Padam Padam is the second single from the artist’s forthcoming album Tension, which is scheduled for September release.
After the disco vibrations of her previous album and the country-pop songs of her 2018 album Golden, she stated that her 2003 slow-burning and sensual single Slow was the musical touchstone for her new material.
This single was Kylie’s last UK number-one by coincidence.
With weekly increases in Padam Padam streams, the singer could return to the top five very soon.
Niall Horan of One Direction achieved his second number-one album with The Show, followed closely by McFly with their seventh studio album Power To Play.
Sprinter, a breezy summer tune by Dave and Central Cee, is the most popular song for a second consecutive week. Another high-profile rap collaboration, Who Told You by J Hus and Drake, is the week’s highest new entry at number two.
And Sam Fender and Harry Styles both receive a boost following their massive UK performances this week.
Fender’s Seventeen Going Under re-enters the Top 40 at position 29, followed by Styles’ Late Night Talking and Satellite at positions 30 and 31, respectively.
