The creator of Matilda The Musical and Groundhog Day the Musical, as well as a comedian and musician in his own right, Tim Minchin, revealed to Backstage that the most recent season of Upright almost did not occur.
In an unanticipated sequel, Tim Minchin and his faithful companion Milly Alcock returned to the Australian wilderness to face the elements and COVID difficulties.
He portrays Lucky, a bewildered rock star who forms an odd friendship with Meg, a street-smart adolescent portrayed by Alcock.
“I must say, after the first season, everything felt so perfect that I had no intention of continuing.
“I said, ‘if we’re going to do a second season, it needs to be crazier, and I’m not going to do a sort of inferior season two,’ and as a consequence, we produced a fairly large adventure in which the characters find themselves in a variety of bizarre scenarios.
“It became very clear that there is an obvious further story to tell.”
This road trip drama begins years after Lucky and Meg’s first meeting when they have become more lost than ever without each other.
Minchin stated, “Four years later, Lucky and Meg have not been in each other’s lives, and as the audience discovers, this is a problem.”
“He’s in a bit of disarray. He is a mess. He has always been disorderly.
Meg is now 17 years old and a young woman with much more adult concerns.
“If you thought they got along poorly in the first season, it hasn’t gotten any better. It’s fascinating because we know how much they love each other, yet neither of them can articulate it.
Despite the hiccups they encountered on set, Minchin had much to say about Alcock’s acting accomplishments while discussing their recent collaboration.
“She is terrific in House Of The Dragon, but she is phenomenal in Upright, particularly in season two, due to the emotional spectrum she must portray. She is a tremendously talented actor.
As I’ve already stated, COVID, flooding, and everything else present a significant obstacle. However, she is a resilient individual.
“There were moments when we were just sitting in a boat, cold, wet, and irritated, and we just had to be together. And we, like Meg and Lucky, survived.
And we’re still friends, which is a marvel considering we’re making a TV show together.
