- Acclaimed actor’s versatile career
His breakthrough performance was alongside Hollywood luminaries Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington in the 1990 film Glory, directed by Ed Zwick.
His publicist has confirmed that Andre Braugher, who portrayed the aloof, emotionally closed-off Captain Raymond Holt on the American comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, passed away at 61.
He appeared in the fictitious 99th precinct alongside Andy Samberg and Terry Crews in the roles of New York police officers. From 2013 to 2021, the series aired for eight seasons, propelling Braugher to international renown as a comedic actor.
Crews paid tribute to him on Instagram: “I am privileged to have worked with you, laughed with you, and spent eight glorious years observing your irreplaceable talent. It was an honour to have known you.”
“This is painful. You departed prematurely from our company. You have taught me an immense amount. I shall be eternally appreciative of the opportunity to become acquainted with you. I appreciate your knowledge, counsel, benevolence, and companionship.
“…You showed me what a life well-lived looks like.”
Versatile Career and Emmy Recognition
It was through gritty criminal dramas that Braugher first gained recognition. In 1998, he received an Emmy for his performance as Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life On The Street and earned another nomination in 2006 for his role as a professional burglar, Nick Atwater, in the miniseries Thief.
Eleven times in total, he received Emmy nominations, four of which were for the best supporting actor in a comedy series for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
