- Gerwig’s “Weird Barbie” casting
- Ronan would have co-starred
- Barbie film’s economic impact
The American publication Variety was informed by Saoirse Ronan that, in the Barbie film, she would have shared the screen with Saturday Night Live comedian Kate McKinnon, who portrayed Weird Barbie alongside Margot Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie.
Saoirse Ronan revealed that, although initially cast in the Barbie film, she couldn’t participate. The Irish actress disclosed that Greta Gerwig’s breakout success had cast her as “weird Barbie” in the movie.
Ryan Gosling plays Ken, and Australian actress Margot Robbie portrays the title character, Stereotypical Barbie. Other variations, such as Sugar Daddy Ken, Judge Barbie, and Mermaid Barbie, have been created.
Saturday Night Live comedian Kate McKinnon portrays weird Barbie, and Ronan told Variety she would have co-starred with McKinnon.
The 29-year-old actress, who appeared in Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Little Women and Gerwig’s 2017 film Lady Bird, stated, “I collaborated with the costume designer, Jacqueline Durran. After they had succeeded, I wondered, ‘Who exactly was I going to be?’ Because I had a scene in the film but never got to perform it and wasn’t in it,” she said, “Oh, Saoirse, it goes without saying that you’re going to be a strange Barbie.”
Ronan’s Vision and Celebrity Cameo Rumours
Ronan, musing on what her Barbie might have been like, remarked, “I believe I would have been the most peculiar girl who always carried her pet dog with her at all times and spoke to it while avoiding eye contact with others.”

Timothée Chalamet, who portrayed Laurie opposite Ronan in Little Women and played a romantic interest in Lady Bird, was rumoured to have had a “speciality cameo” in the film, according to Gerwig, who at the time stated that she was producing the film.
“They both failed, and I was so irritated,” she exclaimed. As Laurie, she portrayed Chalamet opposite Ronan in Little Women. In Lady Bird, she showed her character’s romantic interest, Kyle.
Warner Bros. stated that Barbie’s release contributed over £80 million to the UK economy. The film, a collaboration between Gerwig and her co-writer Noah Baumbach, has garnered numerous award nominations. In early January, it was awarded the inaugural Golden Globe for cinematic and box office success.
