Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend Conor Kennedy said in an Instagram post that he joined Ukraine’s International Legion despite lacking military training and was “ready to die” there.
Conor Kennedy, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, has said he secretly fought against the Russian invasion earlier this year because he was “very touched” by the battle in Ukraine.
Mr. Kennedy, 28, who previously dated singer Taylor Swift, stated in an Instagram post that he volunteered despite having no military training because he “wanted to contribute” and was “ready to die there.
He joined Ukraine’s International Legion and maintained a low profile while fighting abroad because “I didn’t want my family to worry, and I didn’t want to be treated differently there,” he said.
“I had no prior military experience and was a poor shot, but I was able to lift heavy objects and learned quickly. Also, I was willing to die there. Therefore, they quickly consented to transfer me to the northeastern front “he remarked.
“My time in Ukraine was brief, but I saw and experienced a great deal. I appreciated being a soldier more than I anticipated. It is terrifying. But life is straightforward, and the benefits of exhibiting bravery and doing good are significant.
“My pals there are aware of why I had to return home. I will never forget their example. I am aware of my good fortune, yet I would accept all the risks we took again.
“This conflict, like all others, is dreadful. The people I met were the most courageous I’ve ever encountered.”
He urged others to assist in their ways “Join the legion, provide assistance at the border, or bring medical supplies. Someone there makes daily sacrifices for the sake of permanent peace. They cannot be asked to act on their own.”
Mr. Kennedy concluded his message by pointing to a photograph of “my pal Nick” in military attire.
He is the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, a lawyer, and senator who was murdered in 1968, five years after his brother John F. Kennedy was murdered.
Conor Kennedy’s father is Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent anti-vaccine activist in the United States, and his mother was the late Mary Richardson Kennedy.
His girlfriend, singer Giulia B from Brazil, wrote: “You are the most courageous man I’ve ever met, my love… Being away from you and worried for all those months was tremendously difficult, but we maintained our faith throughout, and I want you to know how proud I am.”
