Shortly before his trial, the sexual assault allegations against Rex Orange County were withdrawn.
The chart-topping singer-songwriter, whose real name was Alexander O’Connor and was from Surrey, was charged with six counts of inappropriately touching a lady.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated on Thursday that the evidence “no longer met” the criteria for prosecution.
O’Connor, who refuted the charges, stated that it had been “a trying moment for everyone involved.”
In a post on Instagram, he stated: “Today, all charges have been dropped against me.
“The Crown Prosecution Service evaluated the evidence and determined that there is no justification for proceeding with this matter to trial. On each of the accusations, not-guilty judgments were rendered.
“I have always refuted these charges and am grateful that independent evidence has exonerated me.
“I have never assaulted anyone, nor do I condone any form of violence or violent behavior.”
Falsely accused
In addition, he addressed the “inaccuracies” he said circulated about his situation.
“I was falsely accused of groping someone on their leg, neck, back, and buttocks one evening,” he stated.
“This resulted in six sexual assault charges. The only proof against me was the account of the individual.
“CCTV footage recovered by the police, however, contradicted their account of the events. Their companion was also present during the night in question and provided a statement to the police that contradicted the charges against me.
It’s been a challenging period for everyone involved, and I’d like to thank those who have helped me through it, as well as my family and friends, for their continuous support.
A CPS representative said: “CPS prosecutors are obligated to monitor each case. After carefully analyzing all the evidence, we determined that the legal requirements for prosecution were no longer met; therefore, we will not continue with a prosecution.
“We will always seek prosecution for sexual offenses that meet our legal criteria, regardless of the difficulty.”
This March, Rex Orange County’s third studio album debuted at number one in the United Kingdom.
In July, he canceled tour dates, citing “unforeseen personal problems” as the reason, and in October, the charges were made public.
