Donald Trump has been requested by the estate of Sinéad O’Connor to cease using her music at his political rallies.
Mr. Trump performed Nothing Compares 2 U, O’Connor’s most famous song, at a campaign event in Maryland last month.
It is not an exaggeration, according to the singer’s estate, to say that Sinéad would have been abhorred, offended, and humiliated by his use of her music.
Mr. Trump is vying for the Republican presidential nomination in advance of the November election.
O’Connor’s estate and her longtime label Chrysalis Records issued the following joint statement: “It is widely acknowledged that Sinéad O’Connor exhibited a strong ethical compass that was characterized by integrity, benevolence, impartiality, and propriety in her interactions with others throughout her lifetime.
Therefore, our discovery that Donald Trump had been utilizing her legendary rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U at his political rallies filled us with indignation.
It is in no way an exaggeration to state that Sinéad herself would have been abashed, offended, and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this manner by an individual whom she termed a “biblical devil.”
Estate Battles Trump’s Music Use
The statement concluded, “We, in our capacity as custodians of her legacy, demand an immediate cessation of usage of her music by Donald Trump and his associates.”
The Guardian reported that in addition to Nothing Compares 2 U, songs such as Dancing Queen by Abba, Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash, and Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley were utilized before Mr. Trump’s performance on February 24.
Four weeks in the United Kingdom in 1990, O’Connor’s rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U, which was written by Prince, peaked at number one.
O’Connor passed away in July of last year at the age of 56. The coroner determined that her cause of death was natural.
Additional artists who have requested that Mr. Trump and his team refrain from using their music include Linkin Park, Rihanna, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Adele, and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.
Following his 2016 victory, Mr. Trump assumed the presidency of the United States; however, he was defeated by President Biden in 2020.
