Michael Flatley, renowned for his Irish production Riverdance, has undergone surgery for an “aggressive form of cancer.”
A post on his Instagram page stated that he was “under the care of an excellent team of doctors” and that there would be no further comment.
Flatley, 64, rose to fame with Riverdance, which debuted in Dublin during the seven-minute Eurovision break in 1994.
Its success at Eurovision, where it featured Irish dancers and music by Bill Whelan, led to its expansion into a full-length show that premiered the following year at Dublin’s Point Theatre.
The Riverdance 25th anniversary website suggests that more than three billion people have viewed the show on television since its debut.
Flatley, who was born in Chicago to an Irish-American family, has also created, produced, and directed the films Feet Of Flames and Celtic Tiger.
In 2003, he was diagnosed with facial skin cancer and received treatment for it.
The spy thriller film Blackbird, which he directed and starred in, did not receive many positive reviews.
Flatley portrays former MI6 agent Victor Blackley, who returns to the world of espionage after abandoning it. Eric Roberts, Patrick Bergin, and Ian Beattie also appear in the film.
Additionally, Flatley launched a Lord Of The Dance tour in 2012, which raised funds for the Ukrainian humanitarian effort.
