The Canadian music artist has been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which has rendered the right side of his face completely paralyzed.
Friday night, the 28-year-old Canadian pop artist released a video on Instagram announcing he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a rare ailment.
It has rendered the right side of his face completely paralyzed, he said and will force him to postpone his upcoming tour dates.
Tuesday, he posted on Instagram again, stating: “I wished to express briefly how I’ve been feeling.
“Each day has gotten better, and with all of my suffering, I have found solace in the one who created and knows me.
“I’m reminded that he knows everything about me.
“He is always welcoming me into His loving arms, even though he is aware of my deepest, most shameful secrets.
“This perspective has brought me comfort during this horrifying storm I am currently experiencing.
“I know this storm will pass, but Jesus is with me in the meantime.”
According to the NHS, Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by a virus in the facial nerve; symptoms include blisters in the ears and on the palate, as well as facial paralysis.
If antiviral medication is administered within 72 hours of the onset of symptoms, the likelihood of recovery increases, with 70 percent of this group recovering completely.
However, this percentage reduces to 50% if the patient does not receive prompt care.
The syndrome is treatable with steroid medicine, antiviral drugs, and face rehabilitation.
A 2001 study published in the Journal Of Neurology, Neurosurgery, And Psychiatry indicated that 75% of patients who received treatment within the first three days achieved a full recovery, whereas just 30% of those who received treatment after seven days did.
Professor Derick Wade, an expert in neurological rehabilitation at Oxford Brookes University, told that Bieber looks to have a severe form of the virus, even though most people recover completely.
“I observed that there was no movement, therefore this is a significant loss,” he remarked.
“How effectively will it recover? That has already been answered by him.”
The professor continued: “This type of facial paralysis is extremely common.
“Normal terminology is Bell’s Palsy, and it is believed to be caused by a virus infection damaging a facial nerve as it traverses a very tiny canal in the skull.
“His condition is herpes zoster, which is caused by the chickenpox virus infecting the same nerve in the same location.
“There is no room for it to enlarge, thus it ceases to function while bloated and inflamed,” the reason for the condition.
Bieber stated that he has been performing facial exercises to regain mobility, but it will take some time for him to recuperate.
“We don’t know how long it will take, but everything will be fine,” he said.
His celebrity buddies, including Romeo Beckham, tweeted their support, while his wife, Hailey Bieber, said “I love you, sweetie.”
