In January, Julian Sands, best known for his portrayal opposite Helena Bonham Carter in the 1985 film A Room With a View, went missing in the southern California San Gabriel Mountains.
A renewed search for the British actor Julian Sands, who vanished during a walk in the Californian mountains five months ago, yielded no results.
On January 13, the 65-year-old was reported missing in the Mount Baldy region of the San Gabriel Mountains.
March searches were temporarily suspended due to poor weather and avalanche danger.
The Yorkshire-born actor is best known for his roles in the films A Room With A View, Leaving Las Vegas, and Warlock, in addition to his television appearances on 24, Smallville, and Banshee.
Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2021, Sands has appeared in the Jack Lowden and Peter Capaldi-led drama Benediction, as well as the John Malkovich films The Survivalist and Seneca: On the Creation of Earthquakes and several horror films.
Saturday marked the continuation of search efforts in the Mount Baldy wilderness, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Sands was not located,” it read.
“Over eighty search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff members participated in the search on Saturday. Two helicopters and drone operators assisted them in their mission.
“Aviation resources placed search teams in inaccessible regions of Mount Baldy and conducted aerial searches and assessments. In addition, drone personnel conducted searches in inaccessible areas.
“Despite recent milder temperatures, parts of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions. There are still more than 10 feet of ice and snow in several precipitous terrains and ravines in multiple areas.
“Since January, the sheriff’s department has conducted eight searches (ground and air) for Mr. Sands, with volunteer searcher hours exceeding 500 hours,” the statement continued.
In addition, eight unrelated search and rescue operations were conducted in the Mount Baldy region.
“The case of Mr. Sands’ disappearance remains active, and limited search efforts will continue.”
Recco devices, which can identify electronics and credit cards, have been used by authorities to narrow search areas.
Previously, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office stated that it aimed to “bring closure” to Sands’ family.
The actor’s family praised the “heroic search teams” in January.
