The Threat to Authors
“Truly appreciated… explained or predicted” is how best-selling suspense author John Grisham characterises the “threat” that artificial intelligence poses to his profession.
Authors’ Accusations Against OpenAI
OpenAI has been accused by a group of authors, including himself, of unlawfully training its chatbot ChatGPT, powered by artificial intelligence, using their work.
George R. Martin, Jonathan Franzen, and Jodi Picoult are among those who have joined the recent collective legal action.
Grisham’s Preparedness for Legal Action
Grisham stated, “I am prepared to initiate legal proceedings.”
He continued: “For 30 years, I’ve been sued by everyone else – for slander, defamation, copyright, whatever – so it’s my turn.”
One month ago, OpenAI stated that it upheld authors’ rights, “they should benefit from AI technology,” and that it remained “optimistic that we will continue to find ways to collaborate that are mutually beneficial.”

Anticipation for a Sequel
During an extensive interview, Grisham also addressed the highly anticipated sequel to his critically acclaimed second novel, The Firm.
The Firm, an engrossing narrative initially published in 1991 and subsequently adapted into a Hollywood blockbuster featuring Tom Cruise, centres on a Memphis law firm established by the Mafia for money laundering and facilitating tax evasion.
Following the liberation of the firm’s protagonists Mitch and Abby McDeere, The Exchange follows them as they travel across the nation.
“I cannot merely sit down and dictate the events of a story,” Grisham stated during the Breakfast.
“Inspiration is necessary for me to write the novel. During this time, there are countless other books to write. I could not stop imagining how enjoyable it would be to bring Mitch back with me. I was completely unaware that it would take that long.”
However, will Cruise reprise his role as Mitch?
“I hope so; at this time, it is not in the works,” Grisham stated during the Breakfast.
“If Tom desires it, it shall be accomplished. Whatever Tom does not wish to accomplish is unlikely to be completed.
Crime and legal drama have always fascinated people, according to Grisham, because “we have an addiction to violence” and “people love big sensational trials.”
Grisham’s Pessimism about the Legal System
Today, however, he was “more pessimistic” about the legal system.
“For the past 15 years, I’ve served on two boards dedicated to exonerating innocent people who are in prison,” Grisham stated during the Breakfast.
