Later, in Los Angeles, the Golden Globe Awards will take place, but it is uncertain how many nominees will attend.
After two years of controversy, the organization behind the ceremony hopes to restore both the status of the Globes and its reputation.
In 2021, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was charged with ethical violations and a lack of diversity.
As a result, some stars have criticized the Golden Globes. While others are aware of the awards momentum a Globes win can generate.
Following a string of damaging allegations, the HFPA announced a series of reforms to restore trust. While the 2022 ceremony was scaled back and not televised, they are attempting a comeback this year.
The nominations for the 2023 film and television awards are led by The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once, followed by Babylon and The Fabelmans.
Hollywood backlash
In February 2021, the LA Times published a scathing exposé of the HFPA in which it was revealed that there were no black members in the 87-member voting body and that relatively few members worked full-time for notable foreign publications.
The newspaper’s investigation also alleged that the group frequently accepted “freebies” from studios and PR firms that were vying for nominations, as well as other ethical violations.
The exposure caused NBC to cancel its broadcast of the 2022 ceremony. Which ultimately took place behind closed doors with few celebrities present.
In the meantime, the HFPA announced a series of reforms, including the expansion and diversification of membership. And the prohibition of accepting promotional items from film and television studios.
Now, all eyes will be on Tuesday’s ceremony at the Beverly Hilton to determine if the Globes have been released from Hollywood’s doghouse.
There have been numerous television advertisements leading up to the Globes, and billboards throughout Los Angeles proclaim. “Hollywood’s biggest party is back!” However, this will only be true if Hollywood attends.
Which celebrities will (and will not) attend?
We are certain that four celebrities will be in attendance: filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, actors Billy Porter, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ana de Armas.
Curtis is nominated for best supporting actress for her work in Everything Everywhere All At Once. And de Armas is nominated for best leading actress in a drama for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde.
The HFPA will hope that the announcement of such notable attendees would motivate more to attend.
However, others will be conspicuous by their absence. Brendan Fraser, nominated for best actor for The Whale, has stated that he would not attend the ceremony after accusing former HFPA president Philip Berk of inappropriately touching him in 2003.
The HFPA said that Mr. Berk “inappropriately touched” Mr. Fraser. But that it “was meant as a joke and not as a sexual advance.”
Tom Cruise is virtually certainly going to skip the ceremony. In 2021, he returned his three Golden Globes due to the scandal surrounding the HFPA.
His film Top Gun: Maverick was one of the most popular films of the last year and is nominated for best drama film.
Scarlett Johansson previously urged people in the film business to “pull back” from the HFPA.While her Avengers co-star Mark Ruffalo wrote last year that the organization’s reforms were “discouraging.”
A fresh host
Before the scandal, the Golden Globes were among the most-watched award presentations. The ceremony’s great entertainment value was due in part to the typically astute choice of presenter.
Typically, an acerbic host like Ricky Gervais, Seth Myers, or Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would make fun of the A-listers in the audience and Hollywood in general, but this would not be the case at the more formal Oscars.
This year, American comedian Jerrod Carmichael will serve as host. While Carmichael is not a household name in the United Kingdom, he is well-known on the American comedy circuit.
In 2022, he won an Emmy for scripting his stand-up special, Nathaniel, and was nominated for a nomination for guest hosting Saturday Night Live.
The majority of celebrities are often in excellent spirits at the Golden Globes, which are held in early January. Due to their recent Christmas vacations and the abundance of gratis beverages.
“Traditionally, it was always considered the most enjoyable [awards ceremony] to attend,” Gervais told the Telegraph last week. “Tables piled high with complimentary alcohol, whilst other awards are theatre seating and completely dry.”
Naturally, what is best for the audience is not always better for the performer. As audiences become more intoxicated, it becomes more difficult to capture their attention. I rapidly discovered that the danger of hearing anything unflattering about themselves compelled them to listen.”
Who are the nominees this year?
With eight nominations, The Banshees of Inisherin, a dark comedy starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, leads the pack at the Golden Globes.
Michelle Yeoh stars in the inventive multiverse comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once. Which is the sixth film in the series.
Babylon, Damien Chazelle’s meditation on 1920s Hollywood, and The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical film, each get five nominations.
Baz Luhrmann’s biopic of Elvis Presley, Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion cartoon Pinocchio. And Todd Field’s outstanding drama Tár, starring Cate Blanchett as a disgraced orchestra leader, all have three.
On the television side, the school-based comedy Abbott Elementary leads with five nominations, followed by The Crown with four, Monster. The Jeffrey Dahmer Story with four, Only Murders in the Building with four, Pam & Tommy with four, and The White Lotus with four nominations.
Why are the Golden Globe Awards so important?
While a win at the Golden Globes is not a guarantee of Oscar triumph. It may often assist raise a film’s or actor’s reputation and give them a lift of momentum.
This is partly because the ceremony is broadcast on television. A well-received speech can bring them to the attention of the many Academy voters who watch the Golden Globes.
Additionally, the Golden Globes excel at recognizing emerging talent. Rachel Zegler, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ariana DeBose. Emma Corrin, Richard Madden, Awkwafina, and Taron Egerton all received awards while their careers were on the rise.
This year, Austin Butler, Diego Calva, and Barry Keoghan are among the youngest nominees. Cate Blanchett, Olivia Colman, and Daniel Craig, among other titans of the silver screen, are also in contention for major awards.
