DJ Casper, the musician responsible for the Cha Cha Slide, has passed away at age 58.
The musician, who was diagnosed with kidney and liver cancer in 2016, passed suddenly, according to his wife.
She stated, “Casper was a generous, fun-loving individual.
“He was an honest, family-focused man.
He cherished Chicago with all of his heart. And he will be missed immensely.”
The artist, born Willie Perry Junior, was well known for penning Cha Cha Slide and creating the dance.
DJ Casper laid the foundation for his international hit song in 1998 with the Casper Slide Part 1 – a step-aerobics composition written for his nephew, a fitness instructor.
DJ Casper wrote the Casper Slide Part 2 after its popularity in Chicago aerobics courses and fitness centres.
The September 2000 Universal Records record didn’t chart until 2001, when it reached at 83 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It took until 2004 to attain recognition in the UK.
It topped UK and Irish dance charts when it released.
With a catchy melody and easy-to-understand lyrics, the Cha Cha Slide also featured an accompanying music video with an easy-to-learn line dance, making it a radio and club staple.
DJ Casper’s lone major song was The Cha Cha Slide, which made him a 2000s cult icon.
Casper Classics Radio was operational, and he was due to perform at Leeds’ Popworld Festival last weekend.
He was unable to attend, so festivalgoers danced to the Cha Cha Slide and sent him supporting notes.
A Popworld representative stated, “We are deeply devastated to hear of DJ Casper’s passing, and we extend our condolences to his family and friends.
“DJ Casper was unable to perform at the Popworld festival in Leeds; however, the crowd paid tribute to him by dancing to Cha Cha slide and sending him positive messages of love and support.”
