Cameron Diaz will return to the big screen opposite Jamie Foxx in a new film appropriately titled Back in Action.
The actor and singer Foxx foreshadowed the revelation on social media by posting a recording of a phone call with Diaz.
It comes eight years after the duo co-starred in Diaz’s final film, a 2014 adaptation of Annie in which she played Miss Hannigan.
Diaz, 49, expressed that she was both “nervous” and “eager” to return.
During the same phone call, Foxx, who won an Academy Award in 2004 for his portrayal of US soul singer Ray Charles, connected Diaz with Super Bowl champion Tom Brady to offer some tips on how to stage a major comeback.
Brady returned to the NFL in March 2022, only six weeks after announcing his retirement. “I was speaking with Jamie, and he said you need a few ideas on how to un-retire,” he remarked.
He stated, “I’ve been relatively good at un-retiring.”
“Precisely what I needed,” Diaz responded.
Foxx explained in the caption of his post that he had to enlist the aid of “another Goat” [best of all time] to assist Diaz in his homecoming.
“Cameron “I hope you’re not angry that I videotaped this, but there’s no turning back now,” he announced.
Diaz made her debut opposite Jim Carrey in the 1994 comedy The Mask, and she went on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest actresses.
She was well-known for her Golden Globe-nominated performance in Ben Stiller’s romantic comedy There’s Something About Mary, in addition to her roles in Charlie’s Angels and The Holiday.
She also voiced Princess Fiona in the animated classic Shrek and was nominated for a Bafta for best supporting actor in Being John Malkovich.
The 2014 film adaptation of the musical Annie marked the conclusion of her 20-year film career, which also featured the critically acclaimed Gangs of New York and Vanilla Sky.
In 2018, she publicly announced her retirement from acting, though she had earlier hinted at taking a step back.
Diaz, speaking at an event organized by her friend Gwyneth Paltrow, stated, “I simply went, ‘I can’t tell myself who I am.’ Which is a difficult reality to confront. I felt the need to complete myself.”
She also did not rule out the possibility of returning one day.
After leaving Hollywood, Diaz declared she had found “peace.”
In another interview with Paltrow, this time on the Sliding Doors actress’ wellness podcast, Diaz stated, “I finally found peace in my soul because I was caring for myself.
“It’s a strange thing to say, I know a lot of people won’t get it, but it’s so difficult to work at that level, be so public, and put yourself out there,” she said.
She continued, “There’s a constant flow of energy when you’re a highly public performer doing press and putting yourself out there.”
What has she done for the previous eight years?
Diaz and her husband, Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden, welcomed a daughter via surrogacy in December 2019.
While still working as an actor, the celebrity who had previously published a best-selling health book also invested in health and biotech firms.
The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time was her second book, published in 2016.
Diaz was a keynote speaker at a food festival and afterward created her line of organic wine.
Elizabeth Banks wrote and directed her brief appearance in a revival of Charlie’s Angels while she was still in retirement.
At the 2019 revival, a screen in the Townsend Agency’s Los Angeles headquarters displayed still pictures of Diaz and other stars from past incarnations of Charlie’s Angels.
She participated as a guest judge on the premiere episode of season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars earlier this year.
What information do we have regarding her upcoming film?
Back in Action will be an action-comedy and filming will begin later this year, Netflix revealed, although the plot is “being kept under wraps.”
Seth Gordon, creator of Horrible Bosses, will direct and co-write the film alongside Brendan O’Brien.
The project will reunite Diaz and Foxx, who previously collaborated on 1999’s Any Given Sunday and the aforementioned Annie.
It’s the latest in a series of original Netflix films featuring prominent actors, as the streaming firm tries to stem the decline in customers.
The 2020 release of Project Power, which also stars Jamie Foxx, received 75 million views. To qualify as a viewer, however, subscribers simply needed to view two minutes of the film.
Bird Box (featuring Sandra Bullock), Red Notice (starring Dwayne Johnson), Don’t Look Up (starring Leonardo DiCaprio), and the upcoming The Gray Man (starring Ryan Gosling) are other Netflix original films starring famous Hollywood actors.
