Later, the Bafta Film Awards will be held, with All Quiet On The Western Front from Netflix topping the nominations.
The highly acclaimed World War I epic is a new adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel.
Elvis is closely followed by The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once, whom each has nine titles.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, nominees including Viola Davis, Colin Farrell, Ana de Armas, Paul Mescal, and Cate Blanchett will be present.
Along with the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Baftas is one of the most prominent events of the cinema awards season, which culminates in March with the Oscars.
The British Baftas are the most prestigious film awards event and often the best Oscar predictor.
Will Smith, Troy Kotsur, and Ariana DeBose won the Oscars for best actor, best-supporting actor, and best supporting actress in 2012, just two weeks after they won the same awards in the United Kingdom.
One winner has already been announced: Sandy Powell will be the first costume designer to receive the fellowship, the greatest honor bestowed by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Stars attend Baftas 2023
The fellowship was eliminated last year due to a scandal involving Noel Clarke, the 2021 recipient. Who was accused of sexual harassment soon after receiving the award. Clarke stated that he categorically denied the claims.
The Prince and Princess of Wales have guaranteed their attendance, ensuring that it will once again be a royal affair. Since 2010, Prince William has served as head of the Baftas.
Dame Helen Mirren will also lead a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, whom she portrayed so memorably on film. In 2007, Dame Helen earned both the Bafta and Oscar for best actress for her performance in The Queen.
Cinema frontrunners
All Quiet on the Western Front, which leads this year’s Bafta nominations with 14, is a brutally violent but highly acclaimed film that examines World War I from the perspective of an idealistic young German soldier.
In the major categories, it meets competition from Everything Everywhere All At Once. Which follows a laundromat owner who finds alternative versions of herself in the multiverse.
The imaginative science fiction adventure has been nominated for ten Baftas, as has The Banshees of Inisherin. Which recounts the tale of two best friends living on a remote island who have a falling out.
Elvis, a cradle-to-grave biopic of the singer Elvis Presley, received nine nominations, and Tár, which depicts a famous orchestra conductor who is accused of abuse, received five nominations.
Each of the following films received four nominations. Aftersun, The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick, The Whale, and Good Luck, Leo Grande.
Who will be present at the Baftas?
Among the nominees slated to attend in person are Ana De Armas, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy, Cate Blanchett, Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, Eddie Redmayne, Michelle Yeoh, and Paul Mescal.

Category presenters include Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek, Brian Cox, Eugene Levy, Jamie Dornan, Regé Jean Page, and Taron Egerton.
They will be joined by Catherine-Zeta-Jones, Gwendoline Christie, Lily James, Sir Patrick Stewart, Ariana DeBose, and Troy Kotsur, the latter two upholding the tradition of returning as presenters a year after receiving awards.
Performance honors
Bafta nominations include two black actresses whose Oscar omission prompted a debate about Hollywood racism.
Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler, for The Woman King and Till, are two of the six best actress candidates.
In this category, they are joined by Emma Thompson and Ana De Armas. As well as the Oscar frontrunners, Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett.
Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, and Austin Butler are recognized in the Bafta’s leading performer category this awards season.
Paul Mescal, Bill Nighy, and Daryl McCormack, who starred in Good Luck, Leo!, round out the title. Mescal and Nighy are also nominated for an Oscar.
And in the supporting categories, Angela Bassett and Ke Huy Quan, both Oscar frontrunners, are among the Bafta candidates.
British ability
The Baftas have the majority of the same award categories as other ceremonies, including the most prestigious prizes such as best picture, actor, actress, and director, in addition to a multitude of technical categories.
In addition, the UK ceremony has extra categories designed to recognize British talent.
The Banshees of Inisherin is the only film nominated for both best film and outstanding British feature.
Aftersun stars Paul Mescal as a young guy struggling with fatherhood. While on vacation with his daughter, and Empire of Light is Sir Sam Mendes’ autobiographical ode to cinema.
Living, starring Bill Nighy as an aging civil servant who changes his lifestyle after getting a terminal prognosis, is also nominated, along with the AI robot drama Brian And Charles and the adaptation of Matilda The Musical for the big screen.
See How They Run and The Miracle compete for the British prize.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, starring Emma Thompson as an older woman who pays a younger guy for sex, and The Swimmers, which depicts the true tale of a migrant who swam to British shores after her boat’s engine failed, rounds out the category.
In addition to Electric Malady, Rebellion, Blue Jean, Aftersun, and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is also listed for outstanding debut by a British writer, director, or producer.
