Amy Dowden has been on Strictly Come Dancing every year since 2017. She also has Crohn’s disease. She says she is telling people about her breast cancer and how she plans to treat it so that other women will be more likely to check themselves regularly.
Amy Dowden, who is on Strictly Come Dancing, said she has been told she has breast cancer.
The 32-year-old professional dancer shared the news on social media. During her time on Strictly, she danced with stars like McFly’s Tom Fletcher, EastEnders’ James Bye, and comic Brian Conley.
“Hey everyone, I have some hard-to-tell news,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I just found out I have breast cancer, but before you know it I’ll be back on that dance floor.”
Dowden found out she had cancer less than a year after she married Ben Jones, her longtime dance partner.
She also has Crohn’s disease, which is a disease of the intestines.
In an interview with Hello! magazine, she talked more about her illness and diagnosis. She said, “I’ve been through a lot in my life, and this is just another challenge.” “But if I stay positive and strong, I have a good chance of getting back on the dance floor as soon as possible.”
How an event for charity “might have saved my life”
In June 2022, Dowden took part in a 100km fundraising walk, CoppaTrek! With I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! Get Me Out Of Here! Giovanna Fletcher, wife of Tom Fletcher, was the winner. She did this to help the charity CoppaFeel! raise knowledge about breast health.
She said Hi! This is what made her want to check her breasts.
“CoppaFeel! may have saved my life,” she said. “I don’t know how long this lump could have been there before I would have noticed it and done something about it.” “So if I say something, other people might start checking their breasts and save their own lives.”
Surgery will be part of the treatment
Dowden said she found a lump in her right breast in April and was told she has grade three breast cancer earlier this month.
“My doctor told me there are three grades and grade three is the most aggressive, but they caught mine early and told me not to worry too much because grade three is normal for someone my age,” she said.
Doctors have since found a second lump, and the dancer is now waiting for a full treatment plan, but she says it will “definitely include surgery.”
Strictly Come Dancing stars and other famous people have sent Dowden words of support on Instagram.
Clara Amfo, a TV and radio host who was on the show in 2020, wrote to Amy, “Dear Amy, sending you all the healing strength and love.”
Joe Sugg, a social media star who participated in 2018, said, “Sending you all the love, best wishes, and strength.”
Dianne Buswell and Oti Mabuse, two dancers, also sent notes. Buswell wrote, “Our Welsh dragon is going to fight this!!!! I can’t wait for you to come back and join us on the dance floor. “Amy, we love you so much!”
