The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice until 11 a.m. today. As temperatures in areas such as the Highlands are predicted to plunge to -8 degrees Celsius.
After Britain had a cold spell and continuous downpours at the end of 2022, freezing temperatures. And frosty weather are sweeping over the country.
Until 11 a.m. today, the North of England and all of Northern Ireland are under yellow ice warnings.
The Met Office has also issued yellow ice warnings for Scotland. As temperatures in the Highlands are anticipated to plummet to -8 degrees Celsius tonight.
The forecaster warned of the potential of slips and falls. As well as ice patches on some untreated roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
While rainfall is decreasing for many, it will continue cold in the North and West of the country, with the Met Office stating. “Rain is clearing in the northeast and southeast during the evening, but remains over the Northern Isles.”
There may be a few showers elsewhere, but most of the region will be dry with winds diminishing. Frosty in the north and west with cold temperatures. There are icy portions in the north.”
It stated that “the ice continues to be the primary hazard”
The Met Office says that today will be “far better than recent days,” with most places seeing fine, dry, and bright weather. After a cool start with showers in the southeast during the morning. However, northwest Scotland will continue to have showers.
On Sunday, Dan Stroud, a meteorologist at the Met Office, stated, “We expect temperatures to drop rapidly and widely. Truly below zero – with some rural areas reaching -7C and -8C overnight in the Highlands.”
He continued, “The rest of the United Kingdom will see a colder night than the previous one. With a few showers moving from the north and west through Liverpool Bay. And the Lake District, leaving behind wet surfaces throughout the afternoon and evening.”
After a cold and dry Monday, forecasts predict that the first week of 2023 will be unsettled with damp. And windy conditions for the most part, before warming up.
There are fourteen flood warnings in effect for the next five days, with small flooding from rivers. And surface water anticipated in portions of North West England on Tuesday and Wednesday.
There may also be flooding of land, roads, and some properties, as well as transport disruptions.
The Met Office forecasts that for most of Tuesday and Wednesday, much of the country will experience unsettled. Windy conditions with showers or longer periods of rain.
After a cool start on Tuesday morning, the temperature is likely to rise. And additional rain is projected for primarily central and southern regions on Thursday evening.
