May 3 is observed annually as World Press Freedom Day by UNESCO.  Today marks the occurrence of a highly precarious period for journalists around the world, as the Israeli invasion of Gaza has become the deadliest conflict in the history of media professionals.  "Losing a journalist is equivalent to losing ears and eyes to the outside world." Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement today, "We lose a voice for the voiceless."

According to scientists, Rakus, a male Sumatran orangutan, exhibited a specific behavior in which he tore leaves and chewed on them before administering the resulting mixture to a wound below his right eye. A first for wild animals, an orangutan was observed using a plant with healing properties to treat a laceration on its face, according to scientists.

Germany has issued a warning that "state-sponsored" Russian hackers were responsible for an "intolerable" intrusion against Social Democratic Party (SPD) members, threatening repercussions.  Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced on Friday that a federal German investigation into the perpetrators of the 2023 cyberattack against the SPD, a major coalition partner, had reached its conclusion.

A youthful Afghani activist for women's rights recently departed the country for Iran. Although women in both nations have limited rights, the activist remarked that she noticed an enormous contrast between the two countries upon her arrival. That changed when Iranian women disclosed the suffering they endured at the hands of the Islamic Republic's regime.
