Renowned Renault 5 reappears as £25,000 retro electric car

  • Renault 5 goes electric
  • 250 miles range, £25,000
  • Features bi-directional charging

In 2021, when Renault unveiled an electric concept car based on the cult classic Renault 5, there was tremendous anticipation.

The pivotal inquiry was whether Renault would revive its icon from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s with an antiquated aesthetic.

However, the French automaker is now gratifying its admirers by bringing its original reborn Renault 5 concept to life: an all-electric 21st-century reincarnation of the classic 5 hatchback will hit the road around this time next year.

Preorders are now open for the new Renault 5 E-Tech, which was formally introduced during the Geneva Motor Show; initial deliveries are anticipated to occur in early 2025.

The all-electric “super-modern retro-istic pop icon” iteration of the original Renault 5 will have a range of approximately 250 miles and will cost around £25,000.

Similar to its best-selling antecedent from 1972, this 5 E-Tech will be a compact, quick-moving device that is priced affordably for the budget-conscious consumer. The obvious distinction this time is that the component is entirely electric.

In addition to other cutting-edge technologies, the 5 E-Tech will feature bi-directional charging. This allows you to feed power back to your residence, devices, or the energy grid.

It is sized between a Twingo and a Clio and has a sportier appearance.

Renault 5: Retro Electric Charm

The front fascia has the Renault logo in the centre, while the back has merely ‘Renault 5’.

The front bumper features a sizable air intake designed to facilitate battery and motor cooling. Additionally, it features LED headlights, conventional door handles positioned up front, concealed handles on the rear doors, and vertically layered spine-like tail lights.

The charging port is positioned in the same manner as the Renault Megane E-Tech, near the front tyre arches.

However, in terms of design, this automobile exudes allure. It has an abundance of character both inside and out; it is a vehicle that is enjoyable to drive.

Renault claims that the production vehicle exhibits “95% faithfulness” to the concept. It incorporates a variety of recycled materials such as denim derived from recycled plastic bottles.

Renault made a deliberate effort to imbue the 5 E-Tech with a sense of humanity. A Chanel lipstick holder-shaped gear selector can flash and wink at the driver. Additionally, a baguette basket is attached to the centre console, allowing baguette-hungry French drivers to transport their treats in style.

Furthermore, the exhaust located on the bonnet of the original vehicle has been converted into an external charge-level indicator in the form of a five-pointed star; furthermore, it illuminates as one approaches.
