Airport Reopens After Recovery Effort
Following a “huge team effort” to recover an aircraft that skidded off a runway during Storm Babet, Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has reopened.
Flight Incident Amid Severe Weather
The TUI flight from Corfu deviated from the runway during touchdown on Friday afternoon due to strong winds and precipitation.
After evacuating passengers, the location was closed to facilitate recovery. At 11:30 British Standard Time, the airport reopened.
A “continuing disruption” was anticipated, according to LBA, which urged passengers to contact airlines prior to departure.
A spokesperson stated that the LBA team and partners laboriously recovered the aircraft in torrential conditions throughout the night so that the runway and airport could reopen in a secure manner.
“It has been a tremendous collaborative effort from our partners and every corner of the airport.”

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all individuals who contributed to the recovery of the aircraft following the incident, disruption, and extreme difficulties that accompanied the situation.
Continued Disruption and Rerouting
On Saturday morning, passengers of TUI who were scheduled to depart from Leeds Bradford Airport were rerouted to Manchester.
The operator stated that it was providing investigative support to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
Storm Babet’s Impact
Storm Babet continued to cause extensive flooding, torrential rain, and high winds in various regions of the United Kingdom on Saturday.
On Friday evening, passengers who arrived at Leeds Bradford Airport were met with flight cancellation notices adorning the departure boards, as well as lengthy lines for taxis and buses in torrential rain.
Additionally, passengers were arriving via coaches that had been redirected from different terminals.
One group claimed that their Majorca-Leeds Bradford shuttle had just ended after their flight was redirected to Manchester.
“By 2.30 p.m., we had hoped to return home and enjoy a cup of tea,” one of the women stated.
However, we remain in this wet location, awaiting the arrival of another bus that will transport us into town.
“It’s not a great end to the week.”
